How to Check the History of a Domain Name
DomainHostly Team · 1 November 2026
Before you buy a domain from someone, or decide to wait for one to expire, it is worth knowing its story. Most of it is public.
Every registry publishes basic facts about the names it manages: the date of registration, the expiry date, the last update, the registrar and the current status. These tell you how old the name is and whether it is close to expiring.
Owner details are often hidden today for privacy, so do not be surprised if you cannot see a name or phone number. If you want to buy a name that is in use, the registrar or a broker can usually help you reach the owner.
The status tells you more than most people realise. A name marked as client transfer prohibited is simply locked for safety. Pending delete means it is on its way out. Redemption period means it has expired, but the owner can still get it back by paying a fee.
For the website itself, the Internet Archive shows saved copies from the past. Look at the first and the most recent copy, and a few in between, to see whether the name has always been used for the same purpose.
Our free domain search brings these together. Type a name, press See history and you get its dates, registrar, status and links to its oldest and newest saved copies.
