What Happens When Your Domain Expires

DomainHostly Team · 1 November 2026

A domain is rented, not owned, so it has to be renewed. If the payment is missed, your website and email can stop working even though nothing else has changed.

After the expiry date, most domains enter a grace period. The length depends on the extension and the registrar, and you can usually still renew at the normal price.

Next, many extensions have a redemption period. The owner can still recover the name, but usually only by paying an extra fee. After that it is deleted and anyone can register it.

The most common cause is simple: reminders go to an old email address, or to the developer who set up the site years ago. Make sure the domain is under your own account, with an email address you read.

Turn on auto-renewal if your registrar offers it, and check that the saved card is still valid. Keep the expiry date in your calendar as well. Renewing for several years also reduces the risk.

You can see any domain's expiry date for free in our domain search. If yours is close, renew it today.
